Anime - Death Note

My all time favorite anime series is Death Note. This was recommended to me by the algorithm after watching Garden of Sinners. It centers around the main character Light Yagami. He's an intelligent student who has become bored with his common life.  The death god or Shinigami, Ryuk is also board and decides to drop his Death Notebook down to earth. The notebook allows the owner to write a name in the book and  that person will die.

Light sees the book fall from the heavens and goes to pick it up when class is over.  At first he thinks it's a joke like a chain letter.  Later, maybe out of boredem he tries the notebook.  He is able to successfully end a hostage situation involving kindergarten students.  He brushes it off as a coincidence, but later decides he can use the notebook to benefit society.

With the help of Ryuk he goes on what could be considered a killing spree. He wants to rid the world of all violent criminals. Light wishes to take credit for his deeds and become a hero under the name Kira. The police and Light's father, who is the chief of police, are soon on the hunt for Kira. The lines of right and wrong blur, aren't the violent criminals the real culprits? The police force call upon the mysterious genius "L" to help trap Kira.

Death Note is a horror, mystery wrapped in a police drama with deep writing.  There are serval plot twists and more suspenseful scenes then one can count.  The more episodes you watch, the more of the notebook rules are revealed.  There are 10 pages in total, page 1 is pasted above. Later in the plot we will be introduced to a second Death notebook. The level of writing keeps everything believable and interesting.

This was another series where I found myself rewatching episodes.  Reading the magna first will help.  There are 12 volumes to the main story. The series is 1 season with 37 episodes.
