Most people think of reto video gaming when they think of Nintendo. Originally Nintendo started in 1889 as the Nintendo card company, making playing cards. These cards were smaller and more rectangular then modern day cards. The Hanafunda are a type of Japanese playing cards that are 2.1 by 3.1 square inches. They are much thicker and longer lasting then western cards. They are blank on one side and have plants, tanzaku, animals, birds, or man-made object on the face.
In 1902 Nintendo started producing Western style playing cards in addition to the Japanese versions. You can read more about the Western style cards here.
