I recently watched the first episode of Astro Boy. When I first saw the Robot Circus that Astro Boy was sold to, I immediately thought of Reel Steel a movie from 2011 featuring robot fighters. Reel Steal stars Hugh Jackman as a former boxer that is now a robot fighter promoter, operator and repair man. The premise of the movie is that there is no longer any appetite for human boxing, but robot fighting is all the rage. There are fighting leagues, organized televised fights, underground events and also traveling circus like events.
We are first introduced to Charlie (Hugh Jackman) traveling in a large Mad Max style truck where he sleeps, travels, and transports his massive robot fighter. He stops at a rodeo where he's paid to have his robot fight a bull. This is where we can first drawn the comparison to Astro Boy. Astro's first fight is against Z.O.G. a giant robot with horns that looks like a bull.
Later we are introduced to a junkyard robot whom Charlie's son rescues. He's an old sparring robot who needs a lot of work, but Max insists on fighting. The ancient robot is named Atom, which is Astro boys original Japanese name. Like Astro Boy, he has been discarded by his owner but has more life left in him.
The creators of Reel Steel state it's based on the 1956 short story "Steel" by Richard Matheson. The short story features two promoters dragging an old fighting Robot B2 from Philadelphia via train to a small stadium for a fight. Their robot is falling apart but they lack the funds to fix him. They actually break the robot's arm and Kelly decides he'll climb inside the robot to fight. He barely lasts one round, they are paid half of what they were originally promised. The story ends with them having enough money to fix up most of the robot and fight again.
I can see how the movie is loosely based on Steel. Especially a world in which robot boxing exists. There is a clear nod to Astro Boy and the Robot Circus. Real Steel brings a wrestling show vibe to the world of robot boxing with trash talking interviews and pre-match antics. There are famous robots from the United States and Noisy Boy from the Japanese league. Fans can place their bets on outcomes. The robots aren't autonomous, they still need an operator using a tablet. Although Atom can go on shadow mode and mimic what he sees in front of him. After watching Real Steel I have been hoping for a real life robot fighting league, I will have to settle for battle bots for now. Real Steel 2 is rumored to be in the works.
The Twilight Zone also remade Steel in season 5 episode 2. This takes the short story and uses it as a script to act out the episode. After their robot is damaged one of the promoters decides to fight in his place. Definitely not a fair fight, man vs machine. Is this any different then trans men fighting women in the ring? Someone has a clear advantage. This turns me off from human boxing all together. For now I'll patiently wait for my Robot Circus while rewatching Real Steel.
